Assessment of regeneration state using signal processing and modelling for the objective determination of the occlusive force of the urethral sphincter

The overall project focuses on the investigation of whether and how cell-based regeneration of the urethral sphincter is suitable for treating urinary incontinence. The desired therapeutic effect of this treatment is aimed at the sphincter muscle exerting a higher force – either overall or applied to specific weak spots – on the urethra. Knowing the distribution of the force in the section of the urethra surrounded by the sphincter is therefore of crucial importance. On the one hand, objective and reproducible data need to be acquired in order to assess the results obtained with the chosen therapeutic approach and in order to decide on its further application on the basis of a solid information base. On the other hand, the spatial prediction of weaknesses in the sphincter muscle will also enable a more targeted application of the therapy. In order to achieve all this, a mathematical model based on partial differential equations will be established in order to reconstruct the distribution of the force on the surface of the urethra in the sphincter area from a limited number of measurement data and hence identify weak spots with spatial resolution. The measurement data used will be recorded in a defined experimental set-up using a special measurement catheter and a pig as model animal.
