Teaching and advanced training.

Professional qualifications. Personal competence.

Even before the revision of the Medical Licensure Act, the urological teaching in our hospital was already practice-oriented. In order to already integrate the young colleagues into the hospital routine at an early point in time, we were the first clinic in Tübingen to realise instruction based upon the American model in smallgroups with a lecturer and two to eight students. The students gather practical experiences in catheterisation exercises and prostate screening on a model and expand their knowledge in the speciality through shadowing in the outpatient clinic, on the ward and during endourological or open surgeries. They can also get an initial feeling for surgery by independently operating on the endourological surgery simulator. Due to the close interlinkage with medical technology, this always occurs on the latest technical level. Whether for a clinical traineeship or their practical year, students are always welcome!

TUR-Trainer: training of bladder and prostate surgeries on a 3D computer model.

Once the career entry has been accomplished and the specialisation of urology has been chosen, the clinic offers structured specialty training in which independent open and endourological surgery is taught in addition to the work on the ward. The advanced training offer includes the many urological specialisation fields of medical tumour therapy, neurourology and andrology. The advanced training occurs in a curriculum with a fixed training plan through all areas of the clinic.

Senior physicians responsible for the respective functional area serve as tutors for the training of the young doctors. The fields of activity include urological surgery, patientcare on the urological wards and in the Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) at the polyclinic and providing care for chemotherapy and studypatients in urological oncology. In addition to the table-side-surgical assistance for da Vinci®-assisted procedures, the endourological surgical area is a further emphasis of the training.

The skills for recognising and treating urological pathology area acquired here. Special attention is focused on use of the flexible ureterorenoscope for stone therapy, as well as the transurethral resection. The large number of procedures, a virtual resection simulator and diverse workshops by the Department of Urology at the University of Tübingen lead to the acquisition of comprehensive endourological knowledge by the assistants.

The doctors usually spend the last 12 to 18 months as advanced assistants of the clinic in urological surgery. This is where they master the procedures for average and major urological procedures and sometimes also perform them. In addition, this last phase of training also involves already assuming responsibility on the wards, as well as serving as the contact person for new trainees. At the end of the training, a FEBU (Fellow of the European Board of Urology) diploma is usually also issued in addition to the student becoming a German consultant physician. If there is a corresponding interest in research, there is the possibility of working in the main areas of emphasis that are supervised by senior physicians and attaining expertise, as well as habilitating.
